Final theses in business management and corporate accounting

Topics

The chair covers a wide range of topics in the fields of corporate management and accounting. The subject areas are assigned to three areas for rough orientation:

  • Corporate Governance (CG):
Corporate monitoring, Management Board remuneration, accounting policy, regulatory issues
  • Value-based management (WU):
Value-oriented KPIs, value-oriented management, value-oriented remuneration, business valuation
  • Controlling (CO):
Corporate planning, targets, incentive systems, budgeting, transfer prices, performance measurement with KPIs, performance evaluation

The assignment of the subject areas to the areas serves as a rough orientation, but is not clear. For example, a compensation topic could come in different forms from each of the three areas, for example: Regulation of Executive Board remuneration in Europe (area: CG), remuneration based on value-based indicators (WU) or target agreements, bonus plans and performance incentives (CO).

Students who are writing a bachelor or master thesis at the chair are asked to make a suggestion regarding the subject area they would like a thesis to come from and to which area (CG, WU or CO) it should be assigned. This proposal is for our guidance; there is no guarantee that you will be able to write a paper in your preferred subject area. Specifically, we ask you to describe in the self-disclosure form (free text field) which subject area or subject areas (please name a maximum of three) you are interested in, and from the perspective of which area you would like to write the thesis.

For orientation purposes, we recommend that you review the course documentation for the Bachelor's and Master's courses of the Chair (Introduction to Management and UWM in Bachelor's, AGC and MAC in Master's).

Allocation procedure

The faculty-wide rules apply to the awarding of theses. In addition, the subject area selects Master students if the number of applicants with an initial preference for the subject area exceeds the number of places in the subject area. The selection criteria include the study profile, the academic achievements and the degree to which the applicant profile matches the possible topic of the thesis.

Students who would like to write a thesis in the subject area must complete a self-disclosure form of the chair in addition to the central registration via OPIuM. You can download the self-disclosure form here:

Start dates

The start dates for Bachelor's and Master's theses can be chosen flexibly. The earliest start of the processing period (13 weeks for Bachelor's theses and 20 weeks for Master's theses) is approx. 4 weeks after the assignment, the latest start is before the start of the assignment procedure in the following semester.

Thesis colloquium

The department regularly organises a thesis colloquium for all students writing a Bachelor's or Master's thesis. We expect you to take part in the colloquium during the processing period and to present the progress of your work once during the processing period. For Bachelor's theses, this presentation should take place approx. 4-6 weeks before submission, for Master's theses approx. 6-9 weeks before submission. Further information on the thesis colloquium and the dates of the colloquium can be found in StudIP.
